Four Avenues of Service

Rotarians serve in many ways.  Classically there are four avenues along which members may give their service. They are:

Club Service - includes actions a Rotarian must take within the club to help it function successfully.  Typical areas of service for Bar Harbor (MDI) club members on this avenue include, program development, public relations, club bulletin, club historian, fellowship activities, fundraising, and more recently, web site development and maintenance.

Community Service - Rotarians serving along this avenue are focused on efforts to improve the quality of life for those who live within their club's territory.  These areas include our members working with other partners in service (such as the Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, Island Connections, etc.), working on programs of community development (such as the Red Cross Blood Drive, the local school's business of reading program, the Thanksgiving Food Drive and Christmas for Kids).  In addition, the club supports an Interact club at the local High School, supports the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program in our District, donates funds to worthy organizations and individuals, and gives awards to leaders in the community.

Vocational Service - includes promoting high ethical standards in business and professions, recognizing the usefulness of all worthy occupations and fostering the ideal of service in the pursuit of all vocations.  The club works with the High School on career information programs and a student mentoring program.

International Service - comprises all that Rotarians can do to advance "international understanding, goodwill and peace" by getting acquainted with people of other countries, their cultures, customs, accomplishments, aspirations, problems -- through personal contacts, travel, and attendance at conventions, through reading and correspondence, and through cooperation in all club activities and projects that will help people in all lands.
